Doyle to lead Kildare

John Doyle has been named as the new captain of the Kildare footballers, with Ronan Sweeney named as vice captain.

Doyle made his debut in 2000 and bagged a Leinster medal in his first season. He was last year’s leading scorer in the Championship and the Allenwood star is relishing the chance to lead out his side.

“(Lilywhites boss) Kieran McGeeney in his own day was a huge captain for Armagh,” Doyle told the Irish Daily Mirror.

“The fact that he, as a manager now, sees something in me as captain is great and a definite honour.

“It’s something every young lad dreams about to be captain of the county. You dream of climbing the steps of Croke Park and if you can do it as captain, it’s even better.”

Doyle has captained the side before, both in 2005 and in the 2003 Leinster final, when Anthony Rainbow was forced to miss out because of injury.

While he is in no hurry to depart the inter-county scene, Doyle can not foresee playing on until the age of 37, as Rainbow did.

“We’re all a day older than we were yesterday. It’s a state of mind really. I’ve never picked up serious injuries or I don’t have a problem with weight so they’re very important,” he added.
