Mickey Ned O’Sullivan insists Limerick need to beat Offaly on Sunday next to guarantee their Division Three status.
Limerick are in a strange position because they can, in theory, still gain promotion with a win over the Faithful County, although Kerry native O’Sullivan says his thoughts are preoccupied with avoiding the drop.
Limerick lie in fifth place, level with Roscommon and Cavan on six points, and just two points behind Down, who face the Rossies but already look to have the second promotion spot sewn up by virtue of their superior scoring difference.
“In theory if we lose we could go down and if we win we could go up - that just shows how close the league is,” O’Sullivan told the Limerick Leader.
“We know that on Sunday it is backs against the wall - we have to go and get a win.”
He added: “It is such a competitive league and aside from the big defeat in Louth in the first game, we have been competitive in all games and that knits a team together and all those close games shows up our weaknesses.
“We learned a lot last year in the league for the championship and I am sure that the league will stand to us again this year.”
