About

The Sam Maguire Cup is the most famous trophy in Irish Sport. It is presented to the winners of the GAA All-Ireland County Senior Football Championship each year. (See History of the GAA section and Sam Maguire Cup for much more detail)

The “Sam Maguire” is the most coveted trophy in Gaelic Games and the name is probably the best known in Ireland.

Strange then, that there exists out there a real life Sam Maguire who is fanatical GAA fan of both football and hurling, but in particular football as he comes from a football county.

Yes everybody, that Sam Maguire is I!

From when I was a kid I loved Gaelic games and have grown up immersed in the culture and excitement that is the GAA. The most wonderful aspect of this great voluntary organization is that it penetrates into the very heart of community life.

It is the community in so many rural areas throughout Ireland. Gaelic games are the wool that provides the material for the fabric of community life in this country.

However, this bit is supposed to be about me so I’d better not be too carried away with the subject itself at this point. Rest assured though that from here on the writing will be all about our Gaelic games and not about me.

I live in Collon, County Louth. I am a proud member and committee member of Mattock Rangers CLG, the club of my dreams, named after the river that flows by our pitch. (See Mattock Rangers section)

I am aged 53 and married to Brid who also shares my love of all things GAA, although it truly can be said that she is not as mad as I am.

I am regarded as being a bit mad, but it excuses a lot of crazy behaviour so why not propagate the myth!

I have two sons, Dominic, 21 next week, and Ciaran 17, both GAA fanatics like myself. We share great conversations and arguments on the subject that makes fatherhood so joyful. They play hurling and football with Mattock Rangers so the talk is quite animated at times.

I am a partner with John Mc Keown in Wren Innovations Ltd, who among many things, operate and run the website http://www.lookaroundireland.com.

Thanks to John and his technical expertise, I now have an opportunity and a platform to bring you opinion and information on all things GAA.

I hope you will visit the blog and exchange opinions on any matter relating to GAA.

With your help, I hope to make this an exciting and interactive blog that will interest all who love our traditional games and culture.
